Our History
Golf in Indian Head dates back to the 1890s, though the first club folded in 1903 due to high costs and challenges with prairie scrub. In 1919, locals revived the sport, organizing a course on the Brassy Estate, later moving north of town. Through the 1920s and 30s, the club grew, joining the Provincial Association, but the Depression saw membership dip.
By the late 1930s a clubhouse was built, tournaments were held, and interest remained steady until World War II slowed activity. The postwar years brought fluctuating membership, but volunteers kept the course alive, often mowing, burning brush, and oiling sand greens themselves.
The 1960s marked a major rebuilding, with community efforts shaping the nine-hole layout still in place. Trophies and local tournaments became annual traditions, and golfers achieved regional successes. In the 1970s, membership expanded, youth programs were introduced, and tree-planting projects improved the course.
The 1980s saw a new clubhouse (opened 1984), updated equipment, and steady growth. By the 1990s, further upgrades included tree planting, storage sheds, and, in 1997, the long-awaited transition to grass greens, supported by countless volunteer hours.
Today, Indian Head’s golf course stands as a testament to over a century of community dedication, volunteer spirit, and love for the game.
